Public persuasion
Hearing rooms, newsrooms and microphones.
The Interstate 15 rebuild in Salt Lake City. I ran the public side. The owner tied a seven-figure bonus to community approval; we collected every dollar.
Most of my career has happened in rooms where somebody can say no. A county commission at 9 p.m. A neighborhood that has decided your project is the end of days. A skeptical legislative committee.
Rooms are rarely honest (even with themselves) about what they want; a lot of them just want to be taken seriously. The job is to find the yes everyone can live with.
I’ve done it on more than $3 billion of projects, from a $1.3 billion freeway to water systems that towns didn’t want privatized, and on ballot measures that needed to be won or fought. I’ve also stood at the microphone when the microphone was the job.
Strategy, community, crisis: same room, different nights.
